StixCut User Manual

The complete guide to designing, laying out, and printing custom stickers with your PixCut S1 or StickerPix.

Welcome

StixCut is a native desktop app for macOS and Windows that turns the Liene PixCut S1 into a professional sticker studio. Design cut paths, arrange stickers on sheets, print and contour-cut in one pass — all local, no cloud, no account required.

StixCut also supports the Cricut StickerPix Print+Cut, which uses the same print and cut hardware as the PixCut S1. Everything in this manual that mentions the PixCut S1 or StickerPix applies to the StickerPix Print+Cut.

See the supported printer models for more details.

The Cricut StickerPix Print (without "+Cut") is not supported. It is a print-only machine with no cutter, and StixCut needs a cutter to contour-cut stickers.

You need a Liene PixCut S1 or Cricut StickerPix Print+Cut printer to print. All design, layout, cut-path editing, and export features work without a printer connected.

Getting Started

Download & Install

Download the latest version from stixcut.com/download. macOS: drag the app to your Applications folder. Windows: run the installer.

First Launch

When you open StixCut for the first time:

  1. The main window opens with an empty canvas, a Library sidebar on the left, and an Inspector panel on the right.
  2. A Device Picker overlay appears in the center of the canvas. You can plug in a printer and it will be discovered automatically, or click "Continue without a printer" to start designing.
  3. You may see an announcement popup with news or release notes. Dismiss it with the primary button or press Esc.

Quick Start: Your First Sticker

This step-by-step guide takes you from zero to a printed sticker in about five minutes. You'll need a PixCut S1 or StickerPix powered on and connected (USB or BLE), with media loaded.

  1. Connect your printer. Ensure your PixCut S1 or StickerPix is powered on and your Bluetooth is enabled, or the printer is connected to your computer with a USB-C data cable. Wait a moment for printers to be discovered and Click + Add to add it to your list of known printers. Then click Continue. "Add Files". Select a PNG or JPG image. StixCut imports it and automatically traces a cut path around your design.
  2. No printer? Click Continue Anyway to test StixCut without printing.
  3. Import your artwork. Click the + button in the Library sidebar header and choose Add Files. Select a PNG or JPG image. StixCut imports it and automatically traces a cut path around your design.
  4. Place it on the sheet. Drag the sticker thumbnail from the Library onto the canvas. It appears as a placement on the virtual print sheet.
  5. Check the cut path. If the auto-trace needs adjustment, double-click the cut path to open the Cut Path Editor and fine-tune the nodes.
  6. Adjust the size and position. Drag the placement to reposition it. Drag a corner handle to resize. Use the Inspector on the right to set exact X, Y, Width, Height values.
  7. Set your cut type. In the Inspector's cut layers section, choose Kiss-cut (cut sticker only) or Perf-cut (perforated, for peel-off stickers).
  8. Add a peel tab (optional). If you chose perf-cut, toggle Peel Tab → Enabled in the Inspector. A "Peel Here" tab appears on the sticker.
  9. Fill the sheet (optional). To print multiple stickers on one sheet, place more or use Edit → Auto-Pack Sheet (Cmd Shift P / Ctrl Shift P) to let StixCut arrange them automatically.
  10. Print. Click the "Print & Cut" button in the Inspector's print header. The Progress Sheet opens, showing the job phase tracker as your sticker prints and cuts.
  11. Peel and enjoy. When the job reaches Done, remove the sheet from the printer and peel your sticker.

Drag the dividers between panels to resize.

Floating above the sheet is the toolbar, which contains the document title, quick actions, and printer status.

Floating below the sheet is the zoom bar, which allows you to zoom, pan, and hide some visual guides.

The three-pane layout: Library (left), Canvas (center), Inspector (right).

Library Sidebar

The Library holds all your imported sticker images along with their cut settings. It works like a local folder on disk. Imported stickers are copied into the Library and remain separate from your original file.

The sidebar header shows:

Below the header is the group list. Each group shows:

Right-click a group for options: Rename, Save As Library, Remove Group. Right-click a sticker thumbnail for: Retrace Cut Path, Rename, Remove from Library.

Note: Groups are automatically created when you import folders

Importing Stickers

Click the + button in the sidebar header to open the import menu:

You can also drag-and-drop files directly onto the Library sidebar or onto the canvas. Supported formats: PNG, JPG, JPEG, HEIC (Mac), WebP, TIFF, BMP, SVG, .stix (sticker packages), and .stixlib (libraries).

When a sticker is imported, StixCut automatically runs auto-trace to detect the cut path from the image contours. See Auto-Trace for details.

If an imported SVG's root element specifies a physical size (a width/ height in mm, cm, in, pt, or pc), StixCut sizes the sticker to that physical size on import instead of guessing from pixel dimensions. SVGs with no physical unit (plain numbers, or px) fall back to the usual pixel-based size.

Important: Library vs Cut Layers. The Library stores stickers (images). Each sticker has one or more cut layers attached to it. When you import a PNG or JPG, you get a sticker with one auto-traced cut layer. You can add more cut layers later from the Inspector. Cut layers are per-sticker — they belong to that sticker, not the library. To import an SVG as a cut path, add it from the Inspector as a cut layer — not from the library import menu.

Organizing with Groups

Groups keep your library organized. Click the library + button and select "New Group". Drag stickers between groups to reorganize.

Library Files (.stixlib)

Your library is saved as a .stixlib file — a portable package that includes all sticker images, thumbnails, cut paths, and group structure. Share libraries with other StixCut users or back them up like any other file.

Canvas & Sheet

The Canvas is your design surface. It shows a virtual representation of the physical print sheet at real-world size, with your arranged stickers overlaid.

The Canvas supports:

Canvas with placements, rulers, and cut preview

Adding Placements

A placement is one instance of a sticker on the sheet. To add one:

  1. Drag a sticker from the Library sidebar onto the canvas
  2. Or drag an image file from Finder/Explorer directly onto the sheet
  3. Or click a sticker in the library, then click the placement area on canvas
  4. Or double-click a sticker in the library

Moving, Resizing & Rotating

Click a placement to select it. Selection chrome appears with:

Rulers

Toggle from View → Show/Hide Rulers. The ruler units follow your Display Units preference in Settings → General (Automatic, Inches, or Millimeters). Rulers show tick marks along the top and left edges of the canvas. With Landscape Canvas on, the rulers follow the rotated view and read left to right and top to bottom, as you see the sheet.

Landscape Canvas

Toggle View → Landscape Canvas to turn the sheet on its side while you arrange. It only changes the view: the sheet still prints and cuts in its normal orientation, and documents open the same way on either setting.

Snap Guides

When dragging or resizing a placement near a sheet edge, center, or the edge of another placement, magenta alignment lines appear. These snap the placement into alignment. Toggle from View → Enable Snap.

Cut Preview

When enabled (View → Show Cut Preview), kiss-cut paths render in magenta and perf-cut paths render in green with a dashed stroke. Peel tab icons are shown on placements with peel tabs enabled.

Print Color Preview

The PixCut S1 is a CMY-only dye-sublimation printer — it has no black (K) ink channel, so what you see on screen doesn't fully represent what will actually print. Enable Print Color Preview from the View menu or Zoom bar to see a simulated CMY-only rendering of your design next to the normal view, updating live as you edit. The simulation shows the loss of pure black and dark saturation that comes from having no K channel — it's a visual approximation, not a color-managed ICC soft-proof, and isn't configurable per printer or substrate.

Safety Margin

A visual dashed border inside the sheet edge, configurable in Settings → Cut. Any cut geometry that would exceed this margin is flagged before printing.

Auto-Pack & Shuffle

Auto-Pack Sheet (Cmd Shift P / Ctrl Shift P) arranges all placed stickers using a packing algorithm to minimize wasted space. Shuffle Pack re-rolls the arrangement for variety. Both honor your sticker gap and margin settings.

Inspector Panel

Sticker Borders

Use Sticker border in the Inspector's Image section to add a printable, editable border around imported art. Set its width from 0 to 10 mm, choose a color, and select Centered, Outside, or Inside. The default alignment is Centered and the default color is white. Outside prints beyond the existing cut line as bleed that is removed when the sticker is cut; Inside covers the artwork inside the cut, while Centered splits the border width between both sides. The cut geometry never moves. Border changes can be undone. Open cut paths use a centered stroke so the border does not invent a closing edge. A width of 0 mm turns the border off. The border appears in the live preview and in print, PNG, and PDF output. Border settings are saved with documents and exported .stix and .stixlib packages.

The Inspector is a dynamic collection of settings and tools to help you work. The Inspector panels can be collapsed by clicking on the header, or dragged to re-order.

Printer

On the top of each Inspector mode, there will always be the Printer section.

Beyond that, the Inspector changes its content based on what's selected. It has four modes:

Sheet Controls

Shown when nothing is selected (click empty canvas). Controls the overall sheet configuration:

Stickers

Layers

The Layers panel shows each part of the sticker independently — click the Image layer to adjust raster properties (pan, zoom, rotate within the frame), or click a Cut layer to edit that specific path. This separation lets you move artwork without disturbing cutlines, or tweak a cut path without affecting the image:

Cut Path

Allows adjustment of the currently selected cut path, or creating new cut paths. This section will always show these items:

If the placement has only a single cut layer, or the cut layer is selected in the Layers panel, additional options are shown:

Image

Use these sliders to adjust the color and contrast of your sticker image:

Below the sliders, the Background group holds the image operations:

The Sticker Border group follows, with width, color, and Centered / Outside / Inside placement buttons (see Sticker Borders).

Library Item Controls

Split into Stickers

If one image holds several stickers, for example a sticker sheet you scanned or an image after Remove Background and a retrace, select it in the library and click Split into Stickers. Each separate cut outline becomes its own library sticker in the same group:

The button only appears when the image has more than one separate outline. SVG stickers can't be split.

Cut Paths

A cut path is the outline the PixCut S1's blade follows. Every sticker can have multiple cut layers, each producing its own cut contour. Paths are stored linked to their sticker so they scale automatically with the placement size.

There are two main cut types:

Auto-Trace

When you import an image, StixCut attempts to automatically generate a cut path. The algorithm:

  1. Detects the foreground subject using contour analysis
  2. Simplifies the contour into a path with Bézier curves
  3. Returns a normalized CutPath you can edit in the Cut Path Editor

If the image has no clear foreground, auto-trace falls back to a bounding-box rectangle around the entire image.

To re-trace a sticker: right-click its thumbnail in the library and select "Retrace Cut Path", or in the Inspector, add a Image Trace cut layer.

Manual Cut Layers

Add cut layers via the Inspector when a placement is selected.

Common confusion: To add an SVG as a cut path, use the Inspector's Add SVG cut layer button — not the library import menu. The library imports sticker images; the Inspector adds cut layers to existing stickers. An SVG imported as a cut layer is parsed into precision vector paths attached to the current sticker.

Each layer can be set to kiss-cut or perf-cut independently. Layers can be reordered, edited, or deleted. A sticker with zero cut layers will print but not cut — useful for logos and accents.

Additional per-sticker options:

Cut Path Editor

Double-click a placement's cut path (or click "Edit" on a cut layer row in the Inspector) to open the Cut Path Editor:

Selecting Nodes

Node Menu

Right-click a node to open its menu. Which items appear depends on the node and on what else is selected:

Every node-menu action can be undone with Cmd Z / Ctrl Z.

Union, Smooth & Bake

Several tools help refine your cut paths without manual node editing:

Cut Path Editor with nodes, handles, and bounding box
[Screenshot: Cut Path Editor with nodes, handles, and bounding box visible]
Cut Path Editor — anchors, Bézier handles, and the bounding box transform controls.

Perf-Cut

A perf-cut creates a dashed/perforated cut line — the sticker can stay on the sheet until peeled, or be separated cleanly along the perforation. Configure default perf-cut settings in Settings → Cut, or override dash length and spacing for the current document from the Inspector's Sheet Controls panel (nothing selected); cut type (kiss/perf) itself is set per cut layer from the Inspector when a placement is selected.

Perf-cut works best with simple, smooth shapes. Detailed contours and sharp corners can produce perforations that are more difficult to separate cleanly.

Perf-cutting sends the blade through the backing and into the cutting strip below. Repeated cuts can leave grooves that reduce perf-cut accuracy or leave some areas uncut. Grooves generally will not affect kiss-cuts unless the strip is severely worn. Inspect it regularly and replace it when cuts become inconsistent. Liene and Cricut do not sell replacement strips for these printers. The Cutting Strips + Blades Kit includes replacement strips for the PixCut S1 and StickerPix.

Cutting proceeds one sticker at a time — never interleaved across stickers — starting nearest the bottom of the sheet and working upward. Within each sticker, kiss-cut paths run before perf-cut paths to reduce shifting from the higher perf-cut blade pressure. "Prefer top-down perf-cutting" (Settings → Cut, on by default, overridable per-document from the Inspector's Sheet Controls panel) splits each perf path into top-to-bottom strokes to reduce paper jams; disable it to cut each perf path as one continuous contour instead.

Peel Tabs

A peel tab adds a "Peel Here" starter point to a perf-cut sticker. Enable in the Inspector when a placement has a perf-cut layer. The tab geometry is automatically spliced into the cut path:

SVG Cut Import

Import SVG files as precision cut paths. When a sticker has an SVG cut layer: the SVG's elements are parsed into multi-subpath CutPath objects. Each subpath preserves its closed/open state and Bézier curves. Use this for die-cut templates, custom shapes, or designs created in vector tools like Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer.

SVG import size defaults to the attached image dimensions, but will prompt you for a specific size upon import.

Draw Path Tool

The Draw Path tool lets you create freeform cut paths by drawing directly on the canvas with your mouse or trackpad. Access it from the cut layers section in the Inspector.

Shape Designer

The Shape Designer creates procedural cut shapes or text without needing an external image. Access it from the Inspector's Create Design button, or the Design Shape button under Add Path

Configure the shape parameters, give it a name, and it's added to your library as a new sticker with the shape as its cut path.

Device Picker

The Device Picker appears as an overlay on the canvas when the application is started. StixCut keeps looking for printers in the background after it's closed, so a printer you turn on later (including a second printer) shows up without rescanning. It shows:

Trusted-only mode (enabled by default in Settings → Printer Details) filters discovered devices to only use printers you've specifically added. Print to any discovered PixCut S1 or StickerPix by disabling this mode in settings.

Multiple printers: If you send multiple jobs ot the queue, StixCut will use any available printer you have added to print (or any found printer if trusted mode is turned off). You can choose a specific printer when sending a job by clicking on the printer status row.

Once a printer is connected and stickers are placed on the sheet, click the "Print & Cut" or "Print" button in the Inspector's print header to start a job.

A print job goes through these phases:

PhaseWhat happens
PrepareApp renders the full sheet to a JPEG and an SVG. Validates cut geometry stays within the safety margin.
UploadCut file is sent to the printer first, then the JPEG. File upload is chunked; fractional progress is reported per chunk.
PrintPrinter lays down the color layers: Yellow → Magenta → Cyan → Overcoat. The printer reports states as it progresses.
Action(If needed) Printer pauses for user action — e.g., media or ribbon change.
CutBlade cuts one sticker at a time, starting nearest the bottom of the sheet. Within each sticker, kiss-cut paths run before perf-cut paths.
DoneJob complete. Click "Print Another" to print the same job again.
ErrorSomething went wrong. Error details shown in the terminal log.

Progress Sheet

The Progress Sheet covers the full window during a print job. It opens when you print unless Show progress when printing is turned off in Settings → General; you can always open it by clicking a job in the print queue.

Canceling a job: Select Cancel to stop an active print or cut job. The printer may finish its current operation before stopping, then eject the partially used sheet. If a paper jam prevents normal cancellation, unplug the printer before clearing the media.

Multiple jobs can be queued. The queue status for each job:

The queue shows the four most recent jobs; click +N more to see every job. Hover a job to see a thumbnail of what it will print, click it to open its progress, or use its X button to cancel or remove it. A finished, canceled, or failed job has a Print again button (the circular arrow, also in the job's right-click menu) that sends the same print again. Clear finished removes all completed, canceled, and failed jobs.

Each job captures its print at the moment you click Print. You can open, edit, or close the document while jobs are waiting; they still print exactly what was queued.

The queue is saved and restored when StixCut restarts:

Print History: every finished job, successful or not, is recorded in a print history log. Right-click the print queue and choose Open Print History to view it.

Enable "Auto-remove finished print jobs" in Settings → General to automatically clear completed jobs from the queue. With multiple PixCut S1s, jobs auto-route to the next available printer.

Cut-end extension0 mm (range 0-5 mm)An app-wide setting in Settings → Cut that applies to every cut job. Extends the final endpoint of an open kiss-cut path along its terminal tangent. Closed kiss-cut paths continue along the original contour from the start point to overlap by the chosen distance, up to one full perimeter. It does not alter perf cuts or corner-overcut geometry. The default is 0 mm for compatibility; set 0 to disable it.

Cut Pressure

Knife pressure is no longer a per-sheet or per-document setting. It's resolved from three layers that add together:

  1. A fixed base pressure (42 for kiss-cut, 53 for perf-cut)
  2. An optional per-media offset, set once when you define a custom media type (Settings → General)
  3. An optional per-printer offset, learned from running Cut Calibration or adjusted directly here

The same pressure editor appears in both Settings → Cut and Settings → Printer Details — they're the same control, always editing the currently selected printer's own offset. Use the media picker above the sliders to preview the resolved pressure against any media without changing what's selected on the canvas. The Inspector's Sheet Controls panel shows a read-only summary of the resolved value with a shortcut back to this screen — it no longer has its own pressure sliders.

Knife pressure tip: Test on a small sticker first. Too low = sticker won't separate. Too high = cuts through backing (kiss) or damages the cutting mat. Oracal 651 vinyl uses lower pressure than Liene photo paper. Change any values in very small increments.

Cut Calibration Wizard

Print/cut alignment can drift over time, or differ between individual printer units. The Cut Calibration wizard prints a physical test sheet and walks you through measuring it, then writes a correction directly to the printer's firmware:

  1. Media — pick which media is loaded, or leave the default. Optionally check "Alignment only – skip pressure tests" to skip the pressure grid entirely: every cut line on the sheet is cut as a plain kiss cut and only alignment is corrected. Use this if you never perf-cut — perf-cut can wear down the cutting strip over time, so there's no reason to run a perforation test if you'll never use it.
  2. Print & Cut — StixCut prints and cuts the test sheet
  3. Pressure picks (skipped in alignment-only mode) — peel and inspect the printed kiss-cut, perf-cut, and perf-dash-spacing test grids, and pick the letter (A–E) that performs best for each
  4. Alignment — read the small 0–10 ruler printed at each of the sheet's four corners and enter what you see
  5. Confirm & Write — review the computed correction, then write it to the printer

Calibration results are written directly to the printer's firmware and remembered per-printer by StixCut (the printer itself can't be asked what it currently has stored). If a custom media is selected and this printer has already been calibrated before, you can choose whether the run solves that media's own pressure offset (protecting the printer's established offset) or re-solves the printer's offset directly.

Manual Alignment Offset

For a small, known misalignment — for example, prints landing about a millimeter off in one direction — you don't have to run the full wizard and use a sheet of media just to nudge alignment. Manual Alignment Offset in Settings → Printer Details lets you type an X and Y offset in millimeters and apply it directly:

Templates

Templates let you create reusable layouts with locked placement geometry and placeholder images. Useful for selling custom sticker designs or sharing layouts that others can fill with their own artwork.

Creating a Template

Using a Template

Example: Credit Card Skin Template

Try the built-in credit card skin template to see templates in action. It includes three card-sized cut paths per sheet, pre-arranged for the PixCut S1:

📄 Credit Card Skin — 3-up Template

Download the file, open it in StixCut, double-click each placeholder to swap in your own artwork, and print. The cut paths are already configured for kiss-cut — no editing required.

Image Operations

These controls live in the Background and Sticker Border groups of the Inspector's Image section. Right-clicking a placement on the canvas offers the same operations as shortcuts.

Fill Background

Fills behind the sticker artwork with a solid color, clipped to the cut path. Turn on Fill Background and choose a color with its swatch, or use the right-click menu for Black, White, or the current Sheet Color. The fill is live: it follows cut path edits, and you can change or turn it off at any time without altering the image. It has its own color, separate from the sticker border. Useful if you want a different color margin around your sticker.

Crop to Cut Line

Destructively clips the sticker's raster image to its cut path + a 1 mm bleed. Everything outside the cut path becomes transparent.

Remove Background

Uses on-device machine learning to isolate the foreground subject and remove the background from photos and other images. More aggressive than the default cutlines, use it for stickers where the auto-trace did not find the subject. The sticker will be re-traced after the background is removed.

Replace Image

Swap the sticker's raster image while keeping all cut layers and placement geometry intact. Useful for templates or when you want to update artwork without re-creating cut paths.
